Match funding: Stuart Smith

Stuart completed Brighton Marathon raising money for Prostate Cancer UK

After learning about Kier Foundation's match funding scheme, Stuart accepted a charity place, running the Brighton Marathon for Prostate Cancer UK:

"The day itself was perfect. I had been keeping a close eye on the weather, as the threat of Storm Kathleen was here, but the forecast for Brighton was bright sunshine and unbroken cloud. This was the case, it was probably the best day of the year so far and I even caught the sun on my head!

My aim throughout my training was to be under 5 hours but unfortunately it wasn’t to be. At the half way mark I was on target for about 4 hours 50, and I was ok until about mile 18 when I started getting a fair bit of hip and lower back pain and had to walk.

As the crowds built up back in the middle of Brighton they spurred me on and felt compelled to run even though it hurt a lot!! I finally completed in 5 hours 26.

I chose Prostate Cancer UK for family reasons, and with the knowledge of the match funding scheme I was confident I could reach the fundraising target of £400 for a charity place. They were delighted and sent me a Prostate Cancer UK shirt with some letters to iron my name onto the front.

At the finish line I said to someone that’s my first ever Marathon and it’ll also be my last, however now I know how easy the match funding process is, I'm already thinking about the London Marathon for 2025!"

Congratulations Stuart! We look forward to supporting you again in the future.
